Our researchers presented their work at the Arid Zone Ecology Forum (AZEF) to contribute towards crucial discussions around climate change, economic development, and energy access in arid and semi-arid regions in South Africa.

The SARChI Chair hosted a seminar where Dr Hamza Hamouchene presented his well-received book, "Dismantling Green Colonialism: Energy and Climate Justice in the Arab Region" (2023).
VIEW POSTSeptember 2024 Field Trip
A few of our honours students recently visited the Strandfontein Birding Area and Rondevlei Nature Reserve. The trip provided a fitting conclusion to their elective course, which explored the complexity of nature-culture debates in times of planetary crisis.
VIEW POSTBook Review: Contested Karoo
Contested Karoo received a positive review by Maeder Osler. Osler founded TOVERVIEW in 2021, an operation that operates as a model for innovative approaches to rural communication by offering an autonomous viewpoint on life in the northern Karoo.

VIEW POSTDr. Malope presents in Maputo
At the University of University of Eduardo Mondlane Dr. Malope presented on extractivism in the resource frontier of the Karoo. According to him "the common thread was the exploitation of people and nature in the name of profit".
VIEW POST2024 Induction Fieldtrip
In early February, our team embarked on the annual induction fieldtrip. We visited Sutherland, Canarvon, Prieska, Van Wyksvlei, Williston and Calvinia. Over the course of the trip many of our new and older members identified possible research topics. A highlight was Prof. Nigel Penn, giving a seminar on top of the Hantamberg a site of historic significance.
