THE COSMOPOLITAN KAROO RESEARCH FORUM (CKRF)

At this week’s Thursday Forum, Dr Janie Swanepoel will be presenting on In the Land of the Jackals: Multispecies Narratives in Namibia’s Settler Lands. The session will start at 15:00.

Janie Swanepoel is affiliated with the University of Cologne and works as a responsible business consultant with an NGO called Partner Africa that aims to improve the lives of producers and workers across Africa through global supply chain due diligence. She is currently in the final stages of publishing a book with James Currey on her research in Southern Namibia, provisionally titled: In the Land of the Jackals: Multispecies Narratives in Namibia’s Settler Lands. The book explores postcolonial multispecies relations over time, arguing that looking at settler colonialism in southern Namibia from a human perspective alone is not enough to understand the development of the region. Janie holds a PhD in Social Anthropology, completed as a co-tutelle between the University of Cologne and the University of the Free State. Her ongoing research interests lie in exploring past and present entanglements of animals, people, plants, and soils in relation to political and environmental change.
