Project title: An exploration of farmers’ land use changes, renewable energy and sustainable development in Sutherland, Northern Cape South Africa.

Following the 2018-2021/2022 drought, which undermined the mainstay economic activity of farming in the region, significant shifts in land use practices and agricultural production have occurred within the Karoo’s agricultural sector. Under this specific environmental context, farmers’ land use changes are unfolding within Sutherland, Northern Cape. With the area of focus being the farming community of Sutherland, the aim of the proposed research project is to investigate the perception of Sutherland farmers regarding the land use change of leasing land to large scale wind farms as a sustainable source of income.
