Janie Swanepoel is a postdoc fellow with the Department of Social Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Stellenbosch. Her research focuses on environmental change, rural livelihoods, and multispecies relations in southern Africa. She obtained her PhD in Anthropology from the University of the Free State through a joint doctoral programme with the University of Cologne in Germany. Her doctoral research, titled In the Land of the Jackals: Postcolonial Aridity in Southern Namibia, examines relationships between settler farmers, wildlife, and changing ecological conditions in Namibian ranching communities. Through this work she explores themes such as agrarian change, environmental history, and the social dynamics shaping human–animal interactions in arid landscapes. Swanepoel’s broader research interests include conservation governance, water infrastructure, labour practices in agricultural industries, and the socio-ecological ecologies and histories of southern Africa. Her publications address topics such as predator management, rural land use, and ethical regulation in global agricultural supply chains, contributing to debates on postcolonial environmental politics and sustainability in the region.
