Bernie Moore is a postdoctoral fellow with the Centre for African Studies at the University of Basel. He is also a research fellow at the University of Namibia. His work deals primarily with the economic and environmental history of land and agriculture. He is the author (with L. Lenggenhager) of Space is the Ultimate Luxury: Capitalists, Conservationists, and Ancestral Land in Namibia (Brill/Mukorob, 2025). He is also the editor of a special issue of the Journal of Southern African Studies on the topic of Labour History in Namibia. Prior to coming to Basel, he worked as a history lecturer in the USA and in Namibia.

At the Centre for African Studies Basel, he works on the Curated Escapes & Derelict Landscapes [CEDEL] project, which considers how land use and land accumulation is changing in an era of climate change and increasing economic inequalities. As part of the CEDEL team, Bernie is working on a large project dealing with the relationship between nature conservation, land tenure, and associated financial implications, with his focus on Namibia and Mauritius. Simultaneously, he is writing a book on the political economy of the final days of apartheid.
