Cherryl Walker and Marike van der Merwe attended a research planning workshop of the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) at Kirstenbosch, Cape Town, on Ecological Research & Monitoring at the SKA site.
Cherryl Walker met with the Director and Communications Manager of the SKA, as well as Prof Linda Richter (COE in Human Development, Wits University) at the SKA office in Johannesburg, to discuss possibilities for social research relating to the SKA.
Cherryl Walker attended a specialists’ workshop in Stellenbosch in connection with the Strategic Environmental Assessment of the SKA, being conducted under the auspices of the CSIR.
Caroline Poole attended the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) conference on ‘Karoo Region Small Town Regeneration and Regional Economic Development’ in Beaufort West.
First meeting of the Research Chair’s internal (SU) Reference Group
Currently the internal Reference Group comprises representatives from the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, SU (Dr Thomas Cousins, Dr Khayaat Fakier and HoD Jan Vorster) as well as Prof Karen Esler (Conservation Ecology, SU). They met with Prof Walker, Dr Chinigò and Mrs Hector (administrative assistance) to review progress in the establishment of the research programme to date.
Cherryl Walker, Davide Chinigò and Michelle Duncan participated in the Colloquium on Comparative Perspectives on the institution of Chiefship in Ghana and South Africa, hosted by PLAAS (University of the Western Cape).
Stef Borchardt and Michelle Duncan attended the public consultation meetings held in Graaff-Reinet and Beaufort West as part of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA)

Cherryl Walker attended a workshop hosted by the South African Research Chair in Property Law (SARCPL) on ‘The new Expropriation Act, 2016’ at STIAS, Stellenbosch.

Davide Chinigò met with scientists and project officials at the SKA Organisation Headquarters at Jodrell Bank Observatory near Manchester, UK.
Cherryl Walker was a guest speaker at the Mid-Year Workshop of The Mandela Rhodes Foundation at Solms-Delta, Franschhoek. The topic she was asked to address with scholarship holders was ‘Land as a contested commodity affecting reconciliation, prosperity and equality.’
Davide Chinigò met with Prof Giovanni Bignami, SKA organization, at the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF) in Milan, Italy.
Prof Eugene Cloete, Vice-Rector: Research at Stellenbosch University, visited the ‘Karoo Room’, the newly refurbished seminar room established as a base for the Research Chair. He was thanked for his support for the refurbishment and given a presentation on the work of the Research Chair to date.
