PUBLICATION OF ‘COSMOPOLITAN KAROO: VIEWS FROM THE FIELD’

This limited-edition book of photographs taken in the course of fieldwork by members of the Chair’s research team between 2016 and 2022, edited by Stephanie Borchardt and Cherryl Walker, has recently been published. Copies are being distributed to various town, university libraries and research partners.

International conferences

Dr Tumi Malope, will be presenting a paper at a conference in Munich, Germany, and Prof Robins and Dr. Stef Borchardt will be presenting papers at the ‘African Futures’ European Conference on African Studies in Cologne, Germany from 31 May-3 June, 2023. Prof Robins will also co-convene an ECAS panel.

RETIREMENT OF CHERRYL WALKER

After seven years in the Chair, Cherryl Walker is formally retiring at the end of March 2023. Prof Steven Robins is taking over as Interim Research Leader, pending the finalisation of the NRF’s call for Replacement Chairs later this year. Prof Walker has several ongoing research projects to work on and looks forward to continued collaboration with the Chair.

who will be graduating on Monday 27th March, Stef with a PhD for her dissertation on household energy poverty in De Aar (a renewable energy hub) and Basheer for his MA (with distinction) on local development needs and aspirations in Amandelboom, Williston.

2023 INCEPTION FIELD TRIP

The Chair had a successful field trip the 7th-13th February 2023 through Fraserburg, Carnarvon, Kenhardt, Loeriesfontein and Calvinia, during which they met with research associates and visited various projects, and museums.

to Stephanie Borchardt for successfully defending her Ph.D. dissertation, ‘Illuminating energy poverty: A case study of the energy needs and challenges of low-income households in De Aar, a renewable energy hub in South Africa's Northern Cape Province, at her oral examination on the 7th of December.
